Tax...What is it? How does it work? What's it for?

Is it a big deal...or is it a piece of cake?

If you earn income, a percentage goes to the government to spend on things that everyone in New Zealand can benefit from, such as health, transport, and services such as schools.

Everyone who’s part of the community makes a contribution and the tax you pay is essential to keep New Zealand going and make it a better place.

People have lots of different ideas about tax.

"It's great that taxes pay for my kids education".

"Why should I pay tax? I don't have enough money to live on as it is!"

"PTS, tax codes, rebates...it’s all so confusing!"

"I'm earning on average under $45 a week so I don't have to pay any tax at all".

It's your money we're talking about so it's in your interest to find out how it all works.

Got any questions?

"Yeah, how do I get an IRD number?"
